We demonstrate lattice surgery on a quantum computer with seven physical qubits, implemented as qubits in an ion-trap quantum processor. Two logical qubits are encoded in a distance-3 surface code, and we realize a stabilizer measurement between the two logical qubits, and thereby entangle them, using lattice-surgery-type operations. We observe an entanglement fidelity of up to 0.9. Our results demonstrate that lattice surgery, previously only a theoretical construction, can be implemented with current technology, and it paves the way for more complex operations that are necessary for universal quantum computation.
