We describe a technique for extracting pairs of entangled particles (singlets) from a larger number of pairs in an unknown partially entangled mixed state, using only local operations and classical communication. This technique, entanglement purification, can be used to improve channel capacities, and to establish shared entanglement for quantum cryptography and teleportation.
